Some philosophies:
- Overall, a sense of minimalism. Shedding all but the necessary allows you to pack lighter, require fewer things to carry, and not worry about as much headache. For instance, having only one bag on a flight means it can be stored under the seat and thus being in line and on the plane early (or managing a checked in bag) is no longer a concern.
- Less > More: Carry less
- Usefulness > Weight: Multi-use is better than single use
- Comfort > Over-optimization: Don’t go overboard.
- Bags:
- Opt for the fewest needed bags possible. 1.5 is ideal:
- A roller suitcase only becomes a consideration if the trip is 2 or more weeks and you expect to bring things to or from the location, such as gifts.
- Minimalism
- Pack what you actually need for what you will be doing. What will the trip realistically involve? If the answer is being in a city in between shops and hotels and restaurants, why bring outdoor gear?
- Anything that will be available at the location should be skipped. Body wash for showering? Skip it. Shampoo is typically an exception, people’s hair can be way too vulnerable to the awful ones provided at hotels.
- Rain:
- Check the forecast prior to going. If a very low chance of rain, maybe skip it.
- If in an urban environment, opt for an umbrella. If in the wilderness, the area is very windy, or you very much need to be hands free and have a waterproof/resistant backpack, opt for a packable rain jacket.
